The Beatles In Hamburg 1960

The Beatles were formed in 1960, and would become a popular band of the '60s. They gained a 48-night residency in Hamburg, Germany. George Harrison, who was seventeen at the time, lied about his age so that he could stay in Germany.

Performing at the Top Ten Club violated The Beatles' contract. Bruno Koschmider in turn reported that George Harrison was underage. George was then deported from Germany. Paul McCartney and Pete Best were also deported a week later as a result of a fire they accidentally started. The Beatles were able to return to Hamburg in 1961. By then, Stuart Sutcliffe would leave the band to focus on art studies.

Tomorrow was originally called The In Crowd. Michelangelo Antonioni originally wanted to feature the band in his 1966 film Blowup. He later decided to use The Yardbirds. In 1967, they appeared in the Swingin' London film Smashing Time as The Snarks. Since John "Junior" Wood was ill during the filming of the movie, he was replaced by a clothes dealer named John Pearce. Winston's Fumbs

Tony Kaye became a member of Jimmy Winston and His Reflections in 1966.

The Gamblers

In 1966, Alan White played with Billy Furry's backing band, The Gamblers. They recorded a single that contained "Dr. Goldfoot (And His Bikini Machine)" and "It Seems So Long". They played on the carbaret circuit around England.

The Syndicats

The Syndicats were a band formed in 1963. From 1964 to 1965, they recorded singles produced by Joe Meek. Joe Meek would later murder his wife and commit suicide.

Early Syn Gigs

The Syn were originally formed by Steve Nardelli and John Painter. The band merged with another band called The Selfs. The Selfs included Chris Squire, Andrew Jackman, and Martyn Adelman. The first gig for The Syn took place at Steve Nardelli's school, where they played covers by Holland-Dozier-Holland and The Marvelettes.

In 1966, John Painter was replaced by Peter Banks. John's guitar was given to Peter. Martyn Adelman was also replaced by Icelandic drummer Gunnar Jokull Hakonarson. There was one show where the band performed "Flowerman" and dressed like gangsters with colors of flowers. Peter Banks was a yellow buttercup. Most of their gigs took place at the Marquee Club. These dates were compiled from Steven Sullivan's Yes Gigs 1966-1980.

The Nighthawks were a local Barnet band that included Peter Banks. They lasted from 1963 to 1964.

The Warriors: English Gigs

Jon Anderson joined The Warriors with his brother Tony Anderson and a few other musicians in 1962. They played shows around the North of England. One of the songs they played was a cover of The Beatles song "I'm Down". Jon thought he sang like Paul McCartney, but someone said he sounded like Cilla Black. They're first singles, "You Came Along" and "Don't Make Me Blue" were released for the Decca label in 1964. The latter appeared in a film. The Warriors were sometimes called The Electric Warriors.
